When is the Best Time to Renovate Your Home?

Making the decision to renovate your home is huge. Whether you’re doing a full home renovation or just a one room remodel your whole life is going to be flipped upside down, but what part of the year would be most convenient? There are pros and cons to every season in construction. Factors life supply and demand, availability of contractors, and your schedule all come in to play when it comes to deciding the best time for your family to start a remodeling project.

Spring

Spring time may seem like the best option because the holidays are over, the weather is warmer, and you just got your tax return! That sounds perfect! But what about those April showers? While the show can still go on with a little bit of rain, the extra moisture in the air can cause bloating of materials, muddy floors which could put your crew in danger, and not to mention the mess. Plus you probably have a trip or two scheduled and summer is right around the corner, before you know it your kids are going to be home all day every day and the last thing you want is a house full of kids and strangers all making noise at the same time.

Summer

Summer may seem like the best option because of the weather and the fact that you’re already home, except everyone else thinks it’s the perfect time to renovate as well which makes finding both a building crew and materials that much more difficult! While the temperature may seem ideal, the high humidity could cause problems with certain projects like painting and anything involving wood due to moisture and swelling.

Winter

Winter may be a good option if you don’t host any holidays, but even then the cold can add a new challenge to a renovation and getting supplies in your home may be more difficult. Add all of that on top of the already stressful holidays. If you can spare some time in winter, it could be a fantastic time for small renovations. Most people choose to avoid winter renovations because of the stress which means that most contractors will have plenty of availabilities in the colder months! So if you don’t host for the holidays and your renovation is completely indoors, consider scheduling your remodel during the winter!

Fall

Fall seems to be the obvious choice! The weather is still nice. It’s not 100 degrees, but not 20 degrees yet, you can get your home ready to go for the holidays without stressing too much, and the kids are finally back in school so you don’t have to worry about construction getting in the way of your summer plans, not to mention you may find some amazing deals on furniture and appliances as black friday approaches! While all of those are great reasons to start a renovation during the fall, any delay could push your timeframe right into the middle of the holidays and fall months are an extremely busy time of year for contractors so it may be more difficult to find a company to work with.
